(1)Used in combination with numbers to form expressions denoting units of measure, foot and feet are used typically in the following:

a four-foot plank; a plank four feet (less frequently, four foot ) long; a plank four feet six inches long (or four foot six inches long ).

(2)When foot is combined with greater numbers than one to refer to simple distance, however, only the plural feet is used:

a ledge 20 feet (not foot ) away.
