(1)Infer is sometimes confused with imply, but the distinction is a useful one. When we say that a speaker or sentence implies something, we mean that it is conveyed or suggested without being stated outright:
Infer 有時會和imply 混淆在一起， 但它們之間的差異是很重要的。當我們說某個說話人或某個句子暗含有某種東西時，我們的意思是這種東西是含在其中的或暗示的而沒有公開說出來：
When the mayor said that she would not rule out a business tax increase, she implied (not inferred ) that some taxes might be raised.

(2)Inference, on the other hand, is the activity performed by a reader or interpreter in deriving conclusions that are not explicit in what is said:
